Our History!
Nordlie was founded in 1928 by Fred Nordlie, Sr. in Detroit Michigan. At that time, Nordlie supplied cut flowers from local growers and basic supplies. Roses ranged from 4 cents to 16 cents wholesale. When gladiolas were abundant, they were 25 cents per bunch.
The early years were a challenge due to the depression and it's lasting effects. During the 1940's, Fred Nordlie, Sr. was joined in the business by his two sons, Fred Jr. and Jim. Jim left the business for a time to serve his country as an Air Force pilot in World War II in China.
After World War II, Nordlie was able to expand it's product offerings to a variety of flowers from other states. This was due to the rapidly developing transportation infrastructure in the United States. Iced railway cars from California were used to deliver mums, pomps and carnations. Stops would be made along the way to empty water and refresh the ice. By the 1960's, Nordlie was acquiring flowers from as far away as South America and The Netherlands. Early air freight from California was $10 to $20 for 100lbs.
Also, in the 1960's, Nordlie expanded to Flint Michigan, Cleveland and Dayton Ohio. In pursuit of supplying customers with the very finest quality roses possible, Nordlie acquired rose-growing greenhouses in Newton Falls Ohio, where a branch still remains, and in Olmstead Falls, Ohio. Expansion continued with the addition of a location in Grand Rapids, Michigan in the 1970's and Tampa, Florida in the 1980's.
Nordlie is proud to have been one of the first wholesalers in Michigan to introduce Route Truck Service, and the first to host in-house design shows.
Through Fred Nordlie, Sr.'s vision for the company and the example he set of hard work and relentless customer service, our company continues to thrive. Jim Nordlie, although retired, continues to play an important role in the leadership and direction of the company. His lifelong dedication to this industry has been one a gentlemanly approach to business with diplomacy, kindness and great intelligence.
Today, with seven locations, we constantly strive for the highest quality fresh flowers. Our resources are vast in both fresh flowers and supplies. Our product selection leads the industry and is very progressive and varied.
